Highline Memories

DecadeStory
1990s

I started at Highline in the Fall 1992 quarter as a Journalism major. At that time, Prof. Hashimoto had just started there. It was my first time in college, even though I was in my early 30's, but was excited at the thought of being a college student. However, I dropped out after the Fall 1993 quarter before completing the program. I was not to return again until the Winter 2010 quarter, now being an Administrative Assistant major. Now, I will be graduating in June 2012 from HCC during its 50th anniversary celebration, and I will be turning 50 in April 2012. I am so excited about this.

The only thing that really changed between the early 90s and now that I noticed about the school is the Student Union Bldg. The Bookstore used to be in Bldg. 6 in the 90s, but is now in Bldg. 8. They only had one cafeteria, and that was on the first floor where the conference rooms are now at. and the second floor was the lounge/study area. There never was a third floor. Boy, have times changed!

I loved HCC back in the 90s, and I am so glad I decided to come back in 2010. It is the best in the world due to its diversity and curriculum. It will be an honor to call myself a graduate of Highline Community College and an Alumni.

I love the highline college campus a lot.Not only because it has a wonderful campus with excellent scenario but also it offers so many facilities to all students. Now, I am taking ESL--Level4 & 5 classes at HLCC.I have also registered for some classes in the winter quarter,2012. I have several sweet memories about highline but here I get the chance to share the fondest one.

I would never forget the pleasant experience which I had during the presentation by a student from Kenya during the presenation events from different countries.Really I don't have any vivid idea about the weather, culture, wild animals and life style of the people of any of the country in Africa. But when I attended the presentation I enriched myself and got a clear idea of Kenya. The way of presentation, powerpoint slides and the "you tube" video on the life styles of the tribal people, the migration of wild animal and their habitat and also the geogarphy and geology of Kenya. They also arranged a quiz session after the presentation.Overall,it was an memorable and excellent experience for me.It also makes me happy to get a chance to share my fondest memory at HLCC with others

2000s

I graduated from Highline in 2006 with an AAS degree in Paranormal Studies.  I was 58 years old at the time and I had NEVER been to college before.  I am proud to say that I graduated with honors.  I was extremely apprehensive when I first considered pursuing my degree.  I wondered how well I would function in an academic environment after many years away.  I was also concerned about how the younger students would accept me.  I was pleasantly surprised - on both counts.  My age was never an issue.  In fact, I think my life experience was an advantage.  While it is not universally true, I think that I had a greater appreciation for my education than I would have when I was much younger.   Pursuing my degree was not easy because I was working full-time and I could only attend classes at night.  However, I received a great deal of support and encouragement from my instructors and my fellow students.  Pursuing and earning my degree was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.  I now work for the Washington State Attorney General's Office as a legal secretary where I have been for over 4 years.
